Hypnosis for Surgery Preparation
Physicians are now recognizing the health-promoting values of hypnosis as preparation for surgery and recovery. And this is as it should be, as more, as more and more clinical studies have proven just how valuable the use of clinical hypnotherapy can be toward the success of their operations, and for the healthier recovery of their patients. For example a randomized double blind study in which patients were being hysterectomized demonstrated fewer bowel problems, shorter recovery time, shorter hospital stay, less fever, and a better recovery, than the control group, and that such patients compared with matched controls, patients listening to positive suggestions before and during surgery had less blood loss and a shorter recovery. This clearly shows how valuable the use of hypnosis can be in surgical intervention. Within the scope of benefits of preoperative hypnosis are included, diminution of anxiety, decrease of blood pressure, decrease blood loss, enhancement of postoperative well being, better intestinal motility, reduced hospital stay, reduced postoperative nausea and vomiting, and a decrease in postoperative analgesics, as well as decrease in cost and length of hospital stay.
In 1991 a review of clinical trials using hypnosis in surgical patients found that 89% of the trials demonstrated that hypnosis, relaxation and positive suggestions facilitated the physical and psychological recovery from surgery. Then in 2002 a meta-analysis evaluated hypnosis for surgical patients for its overall effect and benefit for specific clinical outcomes and concluded that hypnosis is an adjunct to surgery and was believed to be successful for the majority of individuals.
It should be pointed out that hypnosis has achieved these excellent results through a non-pharmaceutical intervention. Thus all its positive benefits can be experienced without any fear of harmful side effects. Further, hypnotherapy may actually obviate the need for increased pharmaceutical interventions in many cases.
